Team Illinois took home The Cup in the 2006 division at the North American Championship held in Buffalo, New York, and they did it in impressive fashion. The team skated to a 6-0-1 record with a stunning overtime quarterfinal win over the powerhouse Toronto Junior Canadiens. They then knocked off the previously unbeaten Markham Waxers in the semifinals before meeting the Anaheim Junior Ducks in the finals. The Ducks were finalists last year, coming up short against the Junior Canadiens in 2016. Although the Ducks came in to the finals unbeaten, Team Illinois proved to be too strong and skated to a 6-2 victory in the all U.S. final. Other U.S teams that made strong showings in the tournament were the Minuteman Flames and New Jersey Colonials. The New Yorks Saints, Team Virtua, the MidFairfield Junior Rangers, the Buffalo Regals, the Long Island Gulls, and the Valley Forge Minutemen also looked solid. U.S.A. youth hockey appears to be alive and well.
